Indications

• restoration of Na+ in hyponatremia
• induce abortion
• GU irrigant
• source of electrolytes & water for expansion of the extracellular fluid compartment
• drug carrier for intravenous or inhalation administration

Dosage

• 0.9% (normal saline)
• 23.4% (4 meq/mL)

Adverse effects

• not common (1-10%)
  • congestion, thrombosis, phlebitis, extravasation, hypervolemia, hypernatremia, dilution of electrolytes, overhydration, hypokalemia, pulmonary edema
