Indications
- gastritis
- pernicious anemia (50%)*
- hyperthyroidism (3-6%)
- insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (3-6%)
* tesing for intrinsic factor Ab in the diagnosis of pernicious anemia not indicated[3]
Specimen
- serum or plasma (EDTA)
- avoid administration of vitamin B12 48 hours prior to drawing sample.
- stable 4 hours at room temperature of 3 days refrigerated.
- freeze at -20 degrees C for longer storage.
Interferences
- false positives:
- increased cyanocobalamin
