Introduction

inferomedial, superomedial, & superolateral genicular nerves

Origin

• the origin of the superomedial & superolateral genicular nerves (from the sciatic nerve or from the femoral nerve) is controversial
• the origin of the inferolateral genicular nerve is from the common peroneal nerve
• the origin of the inferomedial genicular nerve is from the tibial nerve
• interindividual variability explains the discrepancy in the literature over nomenclature & origin of the genicular nerves

• see genicular nerve block

Mechanism of action

• local anesthetic spread next to the genicular arteries or at the junction of the epiphysis & diaphysis of the femur & tibia
