  • the visibility of the center of ossification at the distal end of the femur just before birth shown in radiographs is used as:
    • medical-legal evidence, that a newborn infant found dead was near full term & capable of living at birth*

* curious argument; near full term, ok, but having a distally ossified femur would seem neither a necessary nor sufficient condition to support life
