linea aspera

Introduction

A rough ridge with 2 lips running down the posterior shaft of the femur. The lateral lip is a continuation of the gluteal tuberosity. The medial lip is a continuation of the inter- trochanteric line.

The linea aspera gives attachment to:

• vastus medialis
• adductor longus
• adductor magnus
• adductor brevis
• short head of the biceps femoris
• vastus lateralis
• intermuscular septa of the thigh
