Function
- in the hair cortex, hair keratin intermediate filaments are embedded in an interfilamentous matrix, consisting of hair keratin-associated proteins (KRTAP), essential for formation of a rigid & resistant hair shaft via extensive disulfide bond cross-linking with abundant Cys of <A128357>hair keratins</A128357>
- the matrix proteins include the high-sulfur & high-Gly-Tyr keratins
- interacts with hair keratins
Structure
- belongs to the KRTAP type 4 family,
Polymorphism
- numerous size polymorphisms are present in KRTAP4 gene family, which are mainly due to variations in the sequence encoding cysteine-rich repeat segments
Notes
could be the product of a pseudogene
