Introduction

One of the essential sulfur amino acids. Either cysteine or methionine is nutritionally required*. Either may be synthesized from the other, but without one, the other cannot be synthesized.*

* Homocysteine would also suffice.

Formed from cleavage of cystathionine catalyzed by cystathionase.
