Clinical significance
increased risk for spontaneous bacterial peritonitis if:
- protein in ascites fluid < 1.5 g/dL in conjuction with
- serum sodium <= 130 mg/dL
- serum creatinine >= 1.2 mg/dL
- serum urea nitrogen >= 25 mg/dL
- serum bilirubin >= 3 mg/dL
- Child's class B or C cirrhosis[1]
Management
- primary prophylaxis with ciprofloxacin if increased risk for spontaneous bacterial peritonitis[1]
