Indications

• treatment of obesity (FDA-approved July 2015)
  • BMI 30-40, with obesity-related disorder
  • failure to achieve weight loss with diet & exercise alone
  • for use in combination with diet & exercise

Contraindications

• prior bariatric surgery
• prior gastrointestinal surgery

Adverse effects

• gastric ulcers
• indigestion
• abdominal pain
• vomiting
• rare:
  • myocardial infarction
  • infection
  • severe allergic reactions

Procedure

• 2 balloons are inserted endoscopically through the mouth & then filled with saline solution
• outpatient procedure takes < 30 minutes while the patient is mildly sedated
• remove after 6 months

• does not alter the normal stomach's anatomy
