Indications
- treatment of obesity (FDA-approved July 2015)
- BMI 30-40, with obesity-related disorder
- failure to achieve weight loss with diet & exercise alone
- for use in combination with diet & exercise
Contraindications
- prior bariatric surgery
- prior gastrointestinal surgery
Adverse effects
- gastric ulcers
- indigestion
- abdominal pain
- vomiting
- rare:
- myocardial infarction
- infection
- severe allergic reactions
Procedure
- 2 balloons are inserted endoscopically through the mouth & then filled with saline solution
- outpatient procedure takes < 30 minutes while the patient is mildly sedated
- remove after 6 months
Mechanism of action
- creates a feeling of fullness
- does not alter the normal stomach's anatomy
