Etiology
- P gingivalis, P intermedia, B forsythus, F nucleatum, P micros
- can develop on the base of persisting periodontitis but can also occur in the absence of periodontitis
Clinical manifestations
- inflammation; pain, swelling, erythema
Complications
- may spread as a cellulitis or a purulent odontogenic infection
- cavernous sinus thrombosis
Management
- excision & drainage
- antibiotic converage (anaerobes), i.e. penicillin
