pannus

Introduction

A membrane of granulation tissue covering a normal surface. It may take the form of:

• inflammatory synovial tissue found in rheumatoid joints that covers the articular cartilage
  • the pannus progressively destroys the underlying cartilage
• membranes found in other granulomatous diseases
  • tuberculosis
• the cornea in trachoma
