Introduction

Granulation tissue is the initial response to a wound. It develops from the connective tissue surrounding the damaged or missing area & its cellular components are mainly small vessels, inflammatory cells, fibroblasts & myofibroblasts. As the wound closes, there is a decrease in cellularity, especially of the myofibroblasts. This attrition of cells in the evolution of granulation tissue into scar occurs via apoptosis.
