Introduction

Not new, have been around for centuries
Looks like a small teapot or genie lamp
filled with saline and used to irrigate the nasal passage ways
the pot makes a seal with one nostril & the saline runs out the other nostril
Patients can buy saline packet or make solution with non-iodized salt, 1 tsp/2-3 cups of lukewarm water
Adverse effects
- Iodine may impair nasal cilia
- chronic use may associated with increased risk of sinusitis[2]
- 2 deaths in 2011 from Naegleria fowleri associated with use of tap water in Neti pots reported in Louisiana[3]
- case of a woman in Seattle who developed a brain abscess due to Balamuthia mandrillaris from using a neti pot filled with top water filtered with a Brita Water purifier[4]
- Acanthamoeba infection in 10 immunocompromised patients[5]
