gramicidin/neomycin/polymixin-B (Opthneosporin, AK-spore)

Introduction

A combination of gramicidin + neomycin + polymixin-B.

Indications

• treatment of ocular bacterial infections due to S. aureus, S. pneumoniae, Neisseria, E. coli, H. influenzae, K. pneumoniae, K. aerogenes, Proteus

Dosage

• 1-2 drop 4-6 times daily Solution (ophthalmic) neomycin sulfate: 1.75 mg polymixin B sulfate 10,000 units gramicidin 0.025 mg/mL (10 mL)

Adverse effects

• not common (1-10%)
  • edema, itching, reddening, failure to heal, low-grade conjunctivitis

Mechanism of action

• inhibits bacterial protein synthesis
• alters bacterial cell wall permeability
