platyspondyly (platyspondylisis)

Etiology

• osteogenesis imperfecta type2 (congenital platyspondyly).
• thanatophoric dysplasia
• metatropic dwarfism
• Morquios disease (develops later childhood)
• spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia tarda (develops later childhood)
• Kniests dysplasia (develops later childhood)

Pathology

• flattened vertebral body shape with reduced distance beween the endplates
• may be generalised or localised

Differential diagnosis

• if a single vertebra is only affected then this is known as vertebra plana
