Indications
- assess risk of neural tube defect
Reference interval
- concentration of AFP in maternal Serum & Amniotic Fluid is subject to gestational age.
AFP specimen concentration
* M O M = Median AFP concentration for gestational weeks
* M O M = Multiple of the median
AFP values in amniotic fluid: Amniotic fluid AFP values from 699 unaffected, singleton pregnancies expressed as regressed median & multiples of the regressed median (MOM) for gestational weeks 15 to 21 are displayed in the table below:

AFP values have been assigned on the basis of COMPLETE gestational weeks. For example, a specimen obtained on gestational week 18 day 6 is assigned to week 18
Principle
Clinical significance
- human serum or plasma & amniotic fluid at 15 to 21 weeks gestation to aid in the detection of fetal open neural tube defects (NTD). Test results when used in conjunction with ultrasonography & amniotic fluid acetylcholinesterase testing are a safe & effective aid in the detection of fetal open NTD.
