Introduction
Age, Blood pressure, Clinical features, Duration, Diabetes [ABCD2] score for stroke risk after TIA
Indications
- used to predict risk of stroke after transient ischemic attack (TIA)
Clinical significance
- patients with TIA & ABCD2 score >= 3 should be hospitalized
Procedure
Age:
- O if < 60 years
- 1 if >= 60 years
- 1 if systolic BP >140 mm Hg &/or diastolic BP >90 mm Hg
Clinical Features:
- 0 if no speech disturbance or weakness
- 1 if speech disturbance without weakness
- 2 if unilateral weakness
Duration:
- 0 if < 10 minutes
- 1 if 10-59 minutes
- 2 if > 59 minutes
Interpretation
- maximum score is 7
- score > 2 is associated with significantly increased risk of stroke within 90 days of TIA[4]
- no ABCD2 score cutoff reliably predicts TIA patients at risk for stroke
