- upper motor neuron weakness
- no muscle atrophy

- spastic tone

- lower motor neuron weakness
- severe muscle atrophy
- fasciculations are common
- decreased muscle tone
- distal/segmental distribution of weakness
- hypoactive/absent deep tendon reflexes (DTR)
- Babinski's sign is absent
- myopathic weakness
- mild muscle atrophy
