Introduction

defined as 2 episodes of infection due to pneumococcus occurring at least 1 month apart, whether caused by the same or different serotypes or strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae

Epidemiology

  • occurs in at least 2% of patients in most series
  • most important known risk factor for subsequent invasive pneumococcal disease

Genetics

  • associated with defects in IRAK4 (type 1)
  • associated with defects in IKBKG (type 2)
