Uses

  • used in the production of polycarbonate plastics & epoxy resins that are commonly found in some baby bottles, water containers, linings of metal food cans, etc

Pathology

Contraindications

  • FDA bans use in baby bottles & cups[7]

Clinical trials

  • 75 adults ate 12 oz of fresh vs canned soup for 5 days, then crossed over to the other soup for another 5 days[5]
    • urine bisphenol A, collected on days 4 & 5 for each phase was detected in:
      • 77% fresh soup
      • 100% canned soup
    • average urine bisphenol A concentration was ~23 ug/L higher after canned vs fresh soup[5]
    • comment: a control group that did not eat soup at all would have been nice
  • handling of thermal-activated receipt paper without gloves increases bisphenol A levels in urine[10]
  • urinary BPA concentrations were higher 2 hours after elderly subjects drank soy milk from 2 cans versus 2 glass bottles

* cohort studies or case-control studies needed to investigate clinical outcomes of bisphenol A exposure
