Introduction
The thick fibrous membrane covering the entire surface of a bone except its articular cartilage.
Structure
Consists of 2 layers:
- inner layer
- osteogenic: forms new bone tissue
- active in young growing bone; reduced in adults
- outer fibrous connective tissue layer
- conveys blood vessels & nerves supplying bone
Radiology
- nuclear bone scan showing uptake of radionuclide in the periosteum of long bones suggests periosteal thickening of the long bones associated with hypertrophic osteoarthropathy
