Structure
the inferior cerebellar peduncle consists of:
- restiform body (larger lateral bundle)
- crossed fibers from the inferior olive*
- fibers from the dorsal spinocerebellar tract
- fibers from the lateral reticular nucleus
- fibers from the accessory cuneate nucleus
- fibers from the paramedian reticular nuclei
- fibers from the perihypoglossal nuclei
- fibers from other nuclei
- juxtarestiform body (smaller medial bundle)
- vestibular fibers
* a few fibers from the dentate nucleus of the cerebellum project to the inferior olivary nucleus
Origin
Efferents
- the most inferior of the 3 large paired bundles carrying nerve fibers to the cerebellum (cerebellar input)
Course
- fibers develop on the dorsolateral surfaces of the upper medulla.
- they pass under the lateral recesses of the rhomboid fossa & curve dorsomedially into the cerebellum caudally & medially to the middle cerebellar peduncle
