Origin
- ventral ramus of L1
- the ilioinguinal nerve arises together with the iliohypogastric nerve from the ventral ramus of L1
Innervation
- skin of the suprapubic & inguinal regions (upper medial thigh, mons pubis, scrotum or labia majora)
Course
- it enters the abdomen posterior to the medial arcuate ligaments & passes inferolaterally, anterior to the quadratus lumborum muscle, penetrates the transversus abdominis muscle near the anterior superior iliac spine & passes through the internal oblique & external oblique muscles to supply the skin of the suprapubic & inguinal regions
