Origin
- ventral ramus of L1
- the iliohypogastric nerve arises together with the ilioinguinal nerve from the ventral ramus of L1
Innervation
- abdominal muscles
- skin of the suprapubic & inguinal regions
Course
- it enters the abdomen posterior to the medial arcuate ligaments & passes inferolaterally, anterior to the quadratus lumborum muscle, penetrates the transversus abdominis muscle near the anterior superior iliac spine & passes through the internal oblique & external oblique muscles to supply the skin of the suprapubic & inguinal regions.
