Origin
Innervation
- anterior compartment of leg
- dorsum of foot
- skin of adjacent sides of 1st (great) & 2nd toes
Course
- one of the terminal branches of the common fibular (peroneal) nerve, arising from the fibular neck, passing into the anterior compartment of the leg to innervate the tibialis anterior, extensor hallucis longus, extensor digitorum longus & peroneus tertius in the leg
- it crosses the ankle to supply muscles in the dorsum of the foot (extensor hallucis & extensor digitorum brevis), then becomes cutaneous innervating adjacent sides of the 1st toe (hallux) & 2nd toes.
Pathology
Injury:
- loss of ability to dorsiflex the foot (foot drop)
- along with the common fibular nerve, a commonly injured nerve due to its location in the lateral subcutaneous space at the fibular head
