Introduction
Congenital blue-gray macular lesions generally in the lumbosacral area, but may occur anywhere on the skin. Generally a single lesion is present; however, several truncal lesions may be present at birth.
Epidemiology
- 99 to 100% in infants of Asiatic or Native American origin
Pathology
- disruption of melanocyte migration from neural crest to epidermis
- melanocytes within the dermis where they are not normally present
- no melanomas reported in association with Mongolian spots
Clinical manifestations
- blue-gray macular lesions present at birth
- lesions disappear during childhood
