Epidemiology

  • may cause disease or asymptomatic infection in pigs
  • sporadic infections in other mammalian species, including humans, after contact with pigs or pork products
  • median interval between exposure & symptom onset is 2.2 days, shorter for patients with toxic-shock syndrome
