Introduction
Causative agent of filariasis.
Epidemiology
- occurs primarily in China, India, Indonesia, Korea, Japan, Malaysia & the Phillipines.
Vectors:
- Anopheles mosquitoes
- Mansonia mosquitoes
- Coquillitedia mosquitoes
Two forms distinguished by periodicity of microfilaremia
- nocturnal form
- more common
- transmitted in areas of coastal rice fields
- microfilaremia at night
- subperiodic form
- transmitted in forests
- microfilaremia at all times with maximum in afternoon
Brugia malayi also infects cats.
Pathology
- Adults found in lymphatics.
- Microfilaria found in blood.
Laboratory
- Brugia malayi antibody in serum
- Wuchereria bancrofti+Brugia malayi antigen
- Microscopy:
- organisms have sheaths
