Introduction
ARthropod-BOrn virus. Includes encephalitis viruses.
Epidemiology
- occur in summer months
- clear geographic location
- occur in epidemics
- transmitted through insect vectors (arthropods, mostly mosquitoes)
- West Nile virus most commonly reported arbovirus infection in U.S. 2021
Clinical manifestations
- incubation period of 1-3 weeks
- manifested by an acute febrile illness that can progress to
- neuroinvasive disease, including encephalitis, meningitis, & flaccid paralysis[6]
Laboratory
- Arbovirus serology
- Arbovirus identified by culture
