clear cell (light cell)

Introduction

A cell in which the cytoplasm appears empty on light microscopy. An abundance of cytoplasmic glycogen, not stained by H&E, results in a clear cell appearance.

Clear cells of the adrenal contain fine vacuoles with cholesterol & cholesterol esters in cytoplasm; they secrete glucocorticoids & androgens.
