Introduction
naturally occurring human bile acid
Indications
- cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis (FDA-approved)
Dosage
- 250 mg three times per day
Monitor
- liver function test prior to treatment & annually thereafter
- INR if on warfarin
Adverse effects
- diarrhea, abdominal pain & constipation
- headache, hypertension
- muscular weakness
- respiratory tract infections
- hepatotoxicity
Drug interactions
- avoid concomitant use of chenodiol with bile acid sequestering agents & aluminum-based antacids
Mechanism of action
- replaces deficient bile acid
- prevents abnormal deposits of cholesterol metabolites
