Introduction
Unsaturation 6 carbons from the C terminus of the long-chain fatty acid.
Dietary Sources:
- see vegetable oil for omega-3 vs omega-6 composition of vegetable oils
- animal fat (other than fish oil) tends to have a low content of omega-3 fatty acids
Clinical significance
- American Heart Association has recommended >= 5-10% energy from omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids[2]
- increased all-cause mortality from replacing saturated fat in diet with linoleic acid (omega-6) & increased cardiovascular mortality (RR = 1.70)[1]
- omega-6 fatty acids as present in olive oil reduce oxidative stress & mitigate cognitive decline in older adults[3]
