praziquantel (Biltricide)

Introduction

Tradename: Biltricide.

Indications

• trematode & cestode infections
  • opisthorchiasis
  • clonorchiasis
• schistosomiasis
• cysticercosis
• liver flukes
  • except Fasciola hepatica

Dosage

• shistosomiasis: 20 mg/kg PO every 6 hours for 3 doses
• flukes: 25 mg/kg PO every 8 hours for 1-2 days
• cysticercosis: 15-18 mg/kg PO every 8 hours for 14 days
  • adjuntive treatment with glucocorticoids for neurocysticercosis
• tapeworms 10-20 mg/kg as single dose
• Hymenolepis nana: 25 mg/kg as single dose

Tabs: 600 mg

Adverse effects

• not common (1-10%)
  • dizziness, drowsiness, headache, malaise, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, nausea/vomiting, sweating
• uncommon (< 1%)
  • rash, urticaria, pruritus, CSF reaction syndrome in patients treated for neurocysticercosis, fever, diarrhea
