Introduction
Tradename: Senokot. Contains
- sennosides A & B
- glucosides of rhein & chrysophanic acid
Indications
- relief of constipation
- irritable bowel syndrome
Dosage
- 10-15 mL PO QHS
- 1-2 tablets daily as needed, titrate to control
- maximum of 8 tablets/day given as 2 tabs QID
Tabs: 187 mg senna concentrate[4]
Suppositories: 652 mg
Syrup: 218 mg/5 mL
Pharmacokinetics
- onset of bowel relief is 6-12 hours, but may take as long as 24 hours
elimination via liver
Adverse effects
- chronic senna use (> 4 months) may result in melanosis coli
