doxapram (Dopram)

Introduction

Tradename: Dopram.

Indications

• drug-induced or post-anesthesia respiratory depression
• apnea

Dosage

• initial dose: 0.5-1 mg/kg IV
• repeat every 5min up to max of 2 mg/kg
• IV infusion:
  • 5 mg/min until response or adverse reaction
  • decrease to 1-3 mg/min
• max dose 300 mg

Adverse effects

• ectopic heartbeats
• hypotension
• angina
• vasoconstriction
• tachycardia
• headache
• nausea/vomiting

• drug adverse effects of analeptics
• drug adverse effects of psychotropic agents

Mechanism of action

• stimulation of the respiratory centers in the medulla & carotid chemoreceptors
