Introduction
Any cell activated by a change in its chemical milieu, resulting in an action potential.
Chemoreceptor cells may be:
- transducer cells innervated by sensory nerve fibers
- gustatory chemoreceptors of the taste buds
- cells in the carotid body sensitive to changes in oxygen & CO2 content of the blood
- classical neurons
- olfactory chemoreceptors of the olfactory mucosa
- neurons in the brainstem sensitive to changes in the chemical milieu of the blood or CSF
