Introduction
Tradename: Peridex, Hibiclens.
Indications
- antibacterial dental rinse for treatment of oral cavity infections
- soap for eradication of MRSA
- prevention of ventilator-associated pneumonia[3]
* does not reduce nosocomial infection in critically ill ICU patients[4]
Dosage
- dental rinse (Peridex)
- swish 15 mL undiluted oral rinse around in mouth for 30 sec, then expectorate
- do NOT swallow
- use twice daily in the treatment of gingivitis
- precede use by brushing & flossing
- topical agent for use on skin
Solution:
Adverse effects
- staining of oral surfaces
- change or reduction in taste
- anaphylaxis (rare)[5]
- FIRE risk ??
Mechanism of action
- binds bacterial cell wall resulting in altered osmotic homeostasis & cell death
