Epidemiology

  • most common in persons from Mediterranean, Southeast Asia, India, Pakistan

Genetics

deletion or dysfunction of one or both beta-globin genes

Laboratory

Complications

* iron overload can occur in patients with thalassemia without blood transfusion[2]
