germ cell tumor that may contain several different types of tissue, such as hair, muscle, & bone
Pathology
- most are benign
Microscopic pathology
(classification)
- immature
- mature
- solid
- cystic (dermoid cyst) make up ~95% of ovarian germ cell tumors
- monodermal and highly specialized
- struma ovarii
- carcinoid
- strumal carcinoid
Laboratory
- serum alpha-fetoprotein is generally normal with ovarian germ cell tumors
