Function
- EDN1 is the most potent vasoconstrictor known Struture:
- endothelin-1 is a 21 aa peptide derived from a precursor (preproendothelin-1) of 212 aa
- belongs to the endothelin/sarafotoxin family
Compartment
Expression
- mRNA expressed in endothelial cells & in distinct neuronal types in dorsal root ganglia & spinal cord
- ET-1 synthesis is diminished by polyphenols in extracts of red wine[2]
Pathology
- plays a role in endothelial dysfunction & early fatty-streak formation in atherosclerosis of coronary artery disease
