Function
- derived from proglucagon
- stimulates intestinal growth & up-regulates villus height in the small intestine, concomitant with increased crypt cell proliferation & decreased enterocyte apoptosis
- the GI tract, from the stomach to the colon is the principal target for GLP-2 action.
- role in nutrient homeostasis
- decreases mucosal permeability
Expression
- GLP-1, GLP-2, oxyntomodulin & glicentin are secreted from enteroendocrine cells throughout the GI tract
- GLP-1 & GLP-2 are also secreted in selected neurons in the brain
- GLP-1 & GLP-2 are induced in response to nutrient ingestion
Pharmacokinetics
- 1/2life is 1-2 minutes
Comparative biology
- found in mammals only
