Function
- component of an adhesion system
- role in organization of homotypic, interneuronal & heterotypic cell-cell adherens junctions
- may connect nectin-afadin & E-cadherin-catenin system through alpha-actinin
- role in organization of actin cytoskeleton at adherens junctions through afadin & alpha-actinin
- interacts with SSX2 & SSX3, not with SSX1 & SSX4
Structure
- both the N-terminal (1-79) & C-terminal(304-614) regions are required for interaction with SSX2
Compartment
- cell junction, adherens junction, nucleus
- not found at cell-matrix adherens junctions
Alternative splicing
named isoforms=2
Expression
- widely expressed
- expressed in brain > kidney, testis, spinal cord, liver, heart, lung, skeletal muscle, ovary, fetal liver, fetal brain
- little to no expression in pancreas, spleen
- in brain, expressed in all regions, highest expression in amygdala
- expressed in fetal tissues, mainly in liver & brain
