filamin (actin-binding protein)

Function

• cross-links actin filaments at high branch angles
• actin filaments tend to align spontaneously in bundles & a number of actin cross-linking proteins stabilize such bundles
• filamin, however, counter-acts the natural tendency of actin to form bundles orienting & cross-linking actin at high branch angles.
• the network of actin filaments formed by filamin cross-linking creates a cytoskeletal meshwork that excludes organelles (size exclusion), but allows perfusion of soluble proteins & small vesicles
