Function
- glycoprotein specific to acellular membranes of inner ear
- may be required for the anchoring of the otoconial membranes & cupulae to the underlying neuroepithelia in the vestibule
- may be involved in the organization &/or stabilization of the fibrillar network that compose the tectorial membrane in the cochlea
- may play a role in mechanotransduction processes (putative)
Structure
- N-glycosylated (putative), not O-glycosylated
- contains 1 CTCK (C-terminal cystine knot-like) domain
- contains 1 EGF-like domain
- contains 1 TIL (trypsin inhibitory-like) domain
- contains 4 VWFD domains
Compartment
- apical cell membrane, extracellular side
- secreted, extracellular space
- localized in acellular membranes covering the sensory epithelial patches of the inner ear:
- cochlea (the auditory sensory organ)
- tectorial membrane over the organ of Corti
- vestibule (the balance sensory organ)
- otoconial membranes over the utricular & saccular maculae
- cupulae over the cristae ampullares of the 3 semi-circular canals
- found in fiber-like structures during the maturation process of the tectorial membrane
Alternative splicing
