Function
- probable HDL receptor
- receptor for phospholipids, cholesterol ester, lipoproteins, phosphatidylserine & apoptotic cells
- facilitates the flux of free & esterified cholesterol between cell surface & HDL & to a lesser extent, apoB-containing lipopoteins
- involved in the phagocytosis of apoptotic cells, via phosphatidylserine binding
- C-terminal region binds to PDZK1 (putative)
Structure
- N-glycosylated
- belongs to the CD36 family
Compartment
- cell membrane
- predominantly localized to aveolae
Alternative splicing
named isoforms=4
Expression
- widely expressed
Pathology
- receptor for hepatitis C virus glycoprotein E2
- role in HCV attachment &/or cell entry by interacting with HCV E1/E2 glycoproteins heterodimer
- variant in SCARB1 raises HDL cholesterol & increases risk of coronary heart disease[2]
Polymorphism
- the Ser-2 variant is associated with higher plasma triglyceride concentration in subjects with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia
