Introduction

Recombination of DNA from one homologous chromosome to another.

Mechanism[2]

2 homologous chromosomes align, as in 2 non sister chromatids aligning during meiosis.

Endonuclease cuts one strand in each chromosome (double-stranded DNA)

The cut strands cross to the homologous chromosome & join (DNA ligase). This structure is known as the Holliday junction.

A heteroduplex region is formed by branch migration.

The Holliday junction is resolved by subsequent cuts in the crossed or uncrossed strands followed by DNA mismatch repair. Cuts into the uncrossed strands lead to chromsomes with recombinant strands. Cuts into the crossed strands lead to short regions heteroduplex DNA & possibly gene conversion.
