Introduction

In Alzheimer's disease:

Dilated &/or tortuous neurites may be found within & immediately surrounding amyloid plaques. They may contain paired helical filaments. Tau-positive dystrophic neurites are also present in a more widespread distribution in the cortical neuropil apart from neuritic plaques. PHF- or tau-positive dystrophic neurites may be neuronal processes associated with neurons containing neuro- fibrillary tangles.

Some dystrophic neurites are immunoreactive for phosphorylated forms of neurofilament protein.
