Function

• plays a role in weight homeostasis
• may play a role in regulation of melanocortin receptors within the hypothalamus & adrenal gland, & thus in the central control of feeding

Structure

• the presence of a 'disulfide through disulfide knot' structurally defines this protein as a knottin
• contains 1 agouti domain
• 25% identy to human agouti

Expression

• expressed primarily in adrenal gland, subthalamic nucleus, & hypothalamus
• lower level of expression occurring in testis, lung, & kidney

Pathology

• defects in AGRP may be a cause of autosomal dominant obesity
