indirect antiglobulin test (IAT, indirect Coomb's test)

Clinical significance

,Agglutination of erythrocytes by specific antihuman antibodies after an in vitro incubation period (when the direct antiglobulin test is negative) indicating that plasma/serum contains anti- erythrocytic antibodies. Depending upon the application, patient, donor or reagent erythrocytes may be used.

Indirect antiglobilin test is an in vitro test for:

A positive indirect antiglobilin test from a patient specimen does NOT make a diagnosis of hemolysis! A positive test may occur as a result of recent transfusion of red blood cells.
