Function
- protects the skin against infection by gram-positive & gram-negative bacteria (antibacterial activity)
- components of the innate immune system
- proinflammatory properties
- secreted as inactive precursors that undergo enzymatic cleavage to take on their functional form
- binds to bacterial lipopolysaccharides (LPS)
Structure
- N-terminus is blocked
- belongs to the cathelicidin family
Compartment
- secreted
- also isolated as a component of plasma membrane lipid rafts in neutrophils[2]
Expression
- expressed in bone marrow, testis, neutrophils
- expressed in epidermis & other organs
Pathology
- overexpression of kallikrein-5 cleaves cathelicidin thus producing clinical manifestations of rosacea[3]
